The present work compares graphene oxides produced by the Marcano's method and the subsequent reduction process using a microwave system with different power and time sets. The thermal profiles of the reduction processes were analyzed, emphasizing the heat capacity from the 600 W test of 3.44 kJ/K. The X-ray diffraction showed a reduction in the interlayer space and the number of layers in all powers. The infrared and UV-Vis spectroscopy results showed a clear decrease in the bands corresponding to the oxygenated group and partial restoration of aromatic bonds. The Raman spectroscopy showed that the 1000 W power set originated a higher defective structure. The observed results allow the conclusion that the 600 W power promotes a little better result between the analyzed power sets.

RESUMO Foram avaliados os efeitos do β-mercaptoetanol (BME) e da cisteína sobre a viabilidade e a atividade oxidativa após o descongelamento do sêmen ovino e sobre o desenvolvimento in vitro e a viabilidade de embriões ovinos vitrificados. Ejaculados de quatro carneiros foram agrupados e diluídos, compondo seis tratamentos: sem antioxidantes; com BME 2mM; com BME 5mM; com BME 2mM e cisteína 5mM; com BME 5mM e cisteína 5mM; e com cisteína 5mM. Motilidade, integridade da membrana e do acrossoma, função mitocondrial, produção de espécies reativas de oxigênio e capacidade antioxidante total foram semelhantes entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). Em um meio sem antioxidantes, as taxas de clivagem e de desenvolvimento embrionário até blastocisto (60,3%, e 33,6%, respectivamente) foram semelhantes (P>0,05) às obtidas em um meio comBME 50μM e cisteína 600μM (64,3% e 36,6%, respectivamente). A viabilidade pós-descongelamento dos embriões vitrificados não diferiu entre os meios (P>0,05). O BME e a cisteína não influenciaram a viabilidade e a atividade oxidativa do sêmen ovino após o descongelamento e a viabilidade de embriões ovinos vitrificados.

ABSTRACT The effects of β-mercaptoethanol (BME) and cysteine on the viability and oxidative activity of ram sperm after thawing and on development in vitro and viability of vitrified sheep embryos were evaluated. Ejaculates from four rams were pooled and extended, composing six treatments: no antioxidants; 2mM BME; 5mM BME; 2mM BME and 5mM cysteine; 5mM BME and 5mM cysteine; and 5mM cysteine. Sperm motility, membrane and acrosome integrity, mitochondrial functionality, production of reactive oxygen species and total antioxidant capacity were similar across treatments (P>0.05). A medium with no antioxidant presented cleavage and blastocyst development rates (60.3% and 33.6%, respectively) similar (P>0.05) to those of a medium with 50μM BME and 600μM cysteine (64.3% and 36.6%, respectively). Post-thawing viability of vitrified embryos was similar between media (P>0.05). Cysteine and BME had no influence on the post-thawing viability and oxidative activity of ram sperm and on the viability of vitrified sheep embryos.

RESUMO Avaliaram-se 160 radiografias das articulações coxofemorais de 40 cães de diferentes raças de grande porte, provenientes de Belo Horizonte, Brasil. As radiografias de cada animal foram obtidas em dois momentos: um (média de 7,23 meses de idade) e dois (média de 14,25 meses). Utilizaram-se o método radiográfico convencional (MRC) e o método radiográfico em distração (MRD), ambos realizados nos dois momentos. No MRC, mensurou-se o ângulo de Norberg (AN), o ângulo de inclinação (AI) e avaliou-se a presença de doença articular degenerativa (DAD). O MRD foi realizado para se estabelecer o índice de distração (ID). Os objetivos foram avaliar a presença da linha Morgan (LM) e de outros sinais de DAD, correlacionando-os com o grau de displasia coxofemoral (DCF); além de se verificar se o ID maior que 0,3 (primeiro momento) possui associação com a presença de LM (segundo momento). Verificou-se que ID, AI e encurtamento e/ou espessamento do colo femoral e formação de osteófitos foram associados à presença da LM. Observou-se que, quando o ID era maior que 0,3 no primeiro momento, a chance de um resultado positivo da LM no segundo momento aumentava em 7,2 vezes. No primeiro momento, 49 articulações apresentaram ID > 0,3. Destas, 31 (63,3%) apresentaram LM no segundo momento. Dos 31 animais que apresentaram ID ≤ 0,3 no primeiro momento, seis (19,4%) desenvolveram LM no segundo momento. Houve associação significativa entre presença de LM com o grau de DCF, e quanto mais grave a DCF, maior foi o percentual de resultados positivos da LM. Dos 24 (60%) animais que apresentaram LM, 11 (45,83%) foram classificados como displásicos graves, cinco (20,83%) como médios e oito (33,33%) como leves. Nenhum dos animais considerados suspeitos ou normais apresentou LM. Dos oito animais classificados como displásicos leves, cinco apresentaram apenas LM como sinal de DAD.

ABSTRACT We evaluated 160 hip joint radiographs of 40 dogs of different large breeds (25 females and 15 males) from the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The radiographs of each dog were obtained at two different stages: stage 1 (mean 7.23 months) and stage 2 (mean 14.25). The conventional radiographic method (CRM) and the radiographic distraction method (RDM) were used, carried out in both stages. CRM measured the Norberg angle (NA), the angle of inclination (AI) and evaluated the presence of degenerative joint disease (DJD). The MRD was performed to establish the distraction index (DI). The aims were to evaluate the presence of the Morgan line and other signs of DJD and correlate them with the degree of canine hip dysplasia (CHD) and also check if the DI greater than 0.3 (first stage) was associated with the presence of ML (second stage). It was found that DI, AI and changes of femoral neck and the formation of osteophytes were associated with the presence of ML. It was observed that if the DI is greater than 0.3 at the first stage, the chance of a positive outcome of ML in the second stage increases by 7.2 times. Thus, 49 joints showed DI > 0.3 at the first stage, in which 31 (63.3 %) presented ML at the second stage. Of the 31 animals that showed DI ≤ 0.3 at first, six (19.4%) had LM at the second stage. There has been a significant association between the presence of ML and the degree of CHD. The more severe the CHD, the higher the percentage of positive ML results. Thus, among the 24 (60 %) animals that showed ML, 11 (45.83 %) were classified as severe dysplastics, 5 (20.83%) as moderate and 8 (33.33 %) as mild. None of the animals classified as normal or borderline presented ML. Among the 8 animals classified as mild dysplastics, 5 showed only ML as DJD.

RESUMO Este trabalho analisa o efeito larvicida do óleo Zingiber officinale Roscoe contra larvas em terceiro estágio do mosquito Aedes aegypti. Extraiu-se quantitativamente o óleo essencial por hidrodestilação e calculou-se a CL50 do óleo, a partir dos métodos de Reed-Muench e Pizzi, respectivamente. O óleo essencial obteve CL50 de 76,07 (±2,24) μg mL-1 e rendimento de 0,52% m/v. Os resultados indicam que o óleo essencial avaliado é composto por substâncias que propiciam efeito larvicida contra Aedes aegypti.

ABSTRACT This study analyzes the larvicidal effect of the oil of Zingiber officinale Roscoe against larvae in third stage of the mosquito Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus 1792). The essential oil was extracted quantitatively by hydrodistillation and we calculated the oil’s LC50 from Reed-Muench (1938) and Pizzi (1950) methods, respectively. The essential oil obtained LC50 of 76.07 (±2.24) ug mL-1, and yield of 0.52% m/v. The results indicate that the essential oil assessed has substances that provide larvicidal effect against Aedes aegypti.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a variação entre diferentes raças das medidas radiográficas da articulação lombossacra. Foram utilizados 20 cães da raça Pastor Alemão, 20 cães da raça Rottweiler e 20 da raça Doberman. A articulação lombossacra foi avaliada radiograficamente com os membros pélvicos em posição neutra (N), em ventroflexão (VF) e dorsoextensão (DE). Foram mensurados os ângulos entre os processos articulares de L7 e S1 (PA), entre as epífises distal de L7 e proximal de S1 (EPIF), o ângulo lombossacro (LS), a amplitude de movimento (ROM) desses ângulos, o ponto de interseção das retas que formam esses ângulos e a respectiva ROM. Os resultados mostraram que a altura do canal vertebral em L7 é menor no Pastor Alemão (9,5mm) e maior no Rottweiler (10,5mm). O EPIF-DE foi maior no Pastor Alemão (38,03º). O PA-N foi menor no Pastor Alemão (15,98º). O LS-VF foi menor no Doberman (170,01º), e não diferiu entre o Pastor Alemão (179,17º) e o Rottweiler (176,61º). Os cães Pastores Alemães demonstraram uma maior ROM dos ângulos EPIF e LS. Concluiu-se que cães da raça Pastor Alemão apresentam maior instabilidade dessa articulação em relação às outras duas raças estudadas.

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the racial difference of radiographic measurements of canine lumbosacral joints.20 German Shepherd, 20 Rottweiler and 20 Doberman dogs were used in the study. The lumbosacral joint was assessed radiographically with the hind limbs in neutral position (N), in ventral flexion (VF) and dorsal extension (DE). We measured the angles between the L7 and S1 articular processes (PA), between the distal L7 and S1 proximal epiphysis (EPIF), the lumbosacral angle (LS), range of motion (ROM) of these angles, the intersection point of the lines that form these angles and their ROM. The results show that the height of the spinal canal in L7 is lower in German Shepherds (9.5mm) than in Dobermans (10mm) and Rottweilers (10.5 mm). The EPIF-DE was higher in the German Shepherd (38.03°). The PA-N was lower in German Shepherd (15.98 °). The LS-VF was lower in the Doberman (170.01°), and LS did not differ statistically between German Shepherd (179.17°) and Rottweiler (176.61°). The ROM of the LS and EPIF angles were greater in the German Shepherd dogs. It was concluded that the German Shepherd dogs have radiographic measurements that lead to greater instability of the lumbosacral joint.

O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a eficiência dos métodos radiográficos convencional e em distração de cães da raça Pastor Alemão adultos. Foram utilizados 16 animais, sendo onze fêmeas e oito machos, com idade média de quatro anos e dez meses. Todos os cães participantes foram avaliados clinicamente para se detectar a presença de alterações relacionadas ao aparelho locomotor e/ou sistema nervoso que afetariam a locomoção normal do cão, excluindo-se as alterações clínicas decorrentes do quadro de displasia coxofemoral (DCF). Para avaliação radiográfica das articulações coxofemorais, foram realizadas duas técnicas de avaliação, o Método Radiográfico Convencional (MRC), adotado pela Fédération Cynologique Internationale, e o Método Radiográfico em Distração (MRD). Dos animais avaliados, 62,5% foram classificados com algum grau de DCF. A correlação entre o MRC e o MRD foi moderada e a utilização isolada do MRD, pouco eficaz, com sensibilidade de 75% e especificidade de 44%. Nas condições em que este experimento foi conduzido, pode-se concluir que o MRC é um exame eficaz no diagnóstico quando comparado ao MRD em cães da raça Pastor Alemão adultos.

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of conventional and distraction radiographic methods in adult German Shepherd dogs. Sixteen animals were tested, eleven females and eight males, with a mean age of 4.8 years. All dogs were clinically evaluated to detect locomotor and/or nervous system changes that could affect normal locomotion, but clinical hip dysplasia (HD) alterations were excluded. Two techniques were used for radiographic evaluation of hip joints, the Conventional Radiographic Method (CRM), adopted by Fédération Cynologique Internationale and the Distraction Radiographic Method (DRM). 62.5% of the evaluated animals were classified as having some degree of HD. The correlation between CRM and DRM was moderate. When DRM was used alone, it was considered an ineffective method, with 75% sensitivity and 44% specificity. From this study, it can be concluded that CRM is an effective diagnostic method for hip dysplasia when compared to DRM in adult German Shepherd dogs.

Foram avaliados e comparados, para fins de validação, dois diferentes métodos de mensuração de pressão arterial sistólica (PAS), não invasivos ou indiretos (oscilométrico e Doppler vascular) com o invasivo ou direto (cateterização arterial - padrão ouro), em 12 gatos hígidos anestesiados de idade variando entre sete meses e dois anos. Em cada animal, procedeu-se à mensuração simultânea da pressão não invasiva e da invasiva. O método oscilométrico foi comparado, por meio de sete medidas consecutivas, com intervalo de 30 segundos entre elas, com o método invasivo, e, logo em seguida, o método Doppler foi comparado ao método invasivo da mesma maneira. Concluiu-se que o método oscilométrico é estatisticamente igual ao método invasivo, enquanto o Doppler difere de ambos. Entretanto, pela forte correlação positiva entre os métodos Doppler e invasivo, foi possível criar um fator de correção (equação de regressão linear) para se determinar o valor da pressão invasiva, a partir do valor obtido pelo método Doppler. Para obtenção de valores mais fidedignos, recomenda-se a utilização desse fator de correção quando o método Doppler for utilizado para mensuração de PAS em gatos anestesiados.

For validation purposes, two different methods of measurement of systolic blood pressure (SBP), noninvasive or indirect (oscillometric and vascular doppler), direct or invasive (arterial catheterization - the gold standard) were evaluated and compared in 12 healthy anesthetized cats, varying between seven months to two years old. In each animal, we proceeded to the simultaneous noninvasive and invasive measurement of pressure. The oscillometric method was compared by means of seven consecutive measurements with an interval of 30 seconds between them, with the invasive method, and soon after, the doppler method was compared to the invasive method in the same way. It was concluded that the oscillometric method is statistically equal to the invasive method, whereas doppler differs from both. However, due to the strong positive correlation between doppler and invasive methods, it was possible to create a correction factor (linear regression) to determine the value of invasive pressure from the value obtained by the doppler method. To obtain more reliable figures, it is recommended to use this correction factor when the doppler method is used to measure SBP in anesthetized cats.

As cardiopatias cursam com alterações do controle autonômico do coração, resultando em taquicardia e consequente diminuição na variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC). O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar se o desenvolvimento de insuficiência cardíaca secundária à degeneração valvar mitral (DVM) leva a alterações no controle autonômico do coração, as quais podem ser determinadas pela eletrocardiografia contínua (Holter). Cães foram distribuídos em grupos experimentais após avaliação clínica e ecocardiográfica da seguinte maneira: controle (saudáveis; n=6), DVM sem insuficiência cardíaca (n=8) e DVM com insuficiência cardíaca (n=13). Arritmias e VFC foram determinadas pelo Holter. Animais portadores de DVM, quando comparados ao controle, apresentaram diminuição significativa da potência total, a qual é representativa de toda a VFC. Somente cães doentes e com insuficiência cardíaca apresentaram incidência elevada de arritmias supraventriculares, frequência cardíaca aumentada, pequena quantidade de pausas superiores a 2,0s entre batimentos consecutivos, permanência por mais tempo em taquicardia do que em bradicardia, diminuído índice de alta frequência (indicativo de controle parassimpático) e elevado índice de baixa frequência (indicativo de controle simpático e parassimpático), quando comparados ao controle (p<0,05). Assim, conclui-se que, em cães portadores de DVM, as variáveis obtidas com o Holter apresentam-se alteradas devido ao desenvolvimento de insuficiência cardíaca.

Cardiac diseases promote alterations in the autonomic control of the heart, leading to an increase in heart rate and, as a result, a decrease in heart rate variability (HRV).The aim of this study was to evaluate if the development of heart failure secondary to degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) concurs with changes in autonomic modulation of heart rhythm which are assessed by long electrocardiography examination (Holter). Dogs were evaluated by clinical examination and echocardiography in order to be categorized into the following groups: Control (healthy; n=6), DMVD (disease without heart failure; n=8), and DMVD heart failure (disease with heart failure; n=13). Arrhythmias and frequency domain HRV were determined by Holter. Diseased animals, when compared to healthy, had significantly lower total power, which indicates overall HRV. DMVD heart failure dogs also showed other disturbances such as high incidence of supraventricular arrhythmias, high heart rate, little amount of pauses (2.0s long between consecutive heartbeats), longer time in tachycardia, shorter time in bradycardia, low high frequency (parasympathetic control), and high low frequency (sympathetic and parasympathetic control) when compared to control (p<0.05). In DMVD dogs, Holter-derived variables changed with the development of heart failure.

Uma das etapas mais importantes na produção do manjericão é o desenvolvimento das mudas. Nesta etapa, o cuidado com o recipiente e o substrato é essencial, pois afetam diretamente o crescimento e a arquitetura do sistema radicular, bem como, o fornecimento de nutrientes. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desenvolvimento de mudas de manjericão (Ocimum basilicum L.) influenciadas pelo tipo e densidade de diferentes substratos, cultivadas em bandejas de poliestireno com diferentes números de células. O experimento foi conduzido na área de Jardinocultura da Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados (UFGD) em Dourados - MS. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados com cinco repetições, sendo os tratamentos dispostos em esquema fatorial 3x3x5, sendo três tipos de bandejas de poliestireno expandido com 72, 128 e 200 células com volumes internos de 124,3; 44,8 e 17,7 mL, respectivamente. Três tipos de substratos comerciais (PlantMax Florestais®; Tropstrato Vida Verde® e PlantMax Hortaliças HA®), e cinco densidades de substratos (0,36; 0,42; 0,48; 0,54 e 0,60 kg dm-3). Decorridos 78 dias após a emergência das plantas avaliou-se alturas das plantas, massa fresca e seca da parte aérea e sistema radicular, e comprimento de raízes. A produção de mudas comerciais de manjericão (Ocimum basilicum L.) foi melhor com o uso do substrato Tropstrato Vida Verde® na bandeja de 72 células associado com a densidade de 0,47 kg dm-3.

One of the most important stages in the production of basil is the development of seedlings. In this step, care with the container and the substrate is essential, because it directly affects the root growth and architecture, as well as the supply of nutrients. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the development of basil seedlings (Ocimum basilicum L.) influenced by the type and density of different substrates, grown in polystyrene trays with different cell numbers. The experiment was conducted at the Gardening area of the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD) inDourados-MS, Brazil.The experimental design was a randomized block with fivereplications, with treatments arranged in a 3x3x5 factorial design, with three types of polystyrene trays with 72, 128 and 200 cells, with internal volumes of 124.3; 44.8 and 17.7 mL, respectively. We used three types of substrates (PlantMax Florestais®; Tropstrato Vida Verde®and PlantMax Hortaliças HA®) and five densities of substrate (0.36, 0.42, 0.48, 0.54 and 0.60 kg dm-3). After 78 days of plant emergence, we evaluatedthem regarding: plant height, fresh and dry shoot and root, and root length. The commercial production of basil seedlings was improved with the use of the substrate Tropstrato Vida Verde® in a 72 cell tray associated with the density of 0.47 kg dm-3.

O uso de animais como modelos experimentais muitas vezes exige a administração de sedativos ou anestésicos, particularmente quando se trata de avaliação ecoDopplercardiográfica de coelhos. No entanto, existem poucas informações sobre os protocolos e seus efeitos nestes parâmetros. Diante deste contexto, foram utilizados 20 coelhos Nova Zelândia machos, com cinco meses e 3,2kg, distribuídos em dois grupos de 10 animais cada: G1 - maleato de midazolam associado ao cloridrato de cetamina, e G2 - maleato de midazolam. Compararam-se o efeito dos dois protocolos sob os índices funcionais do ventrículo esquerdo e os fluxos valvares, e observaram-se menores valores de frequência cardíaca e da fração de ejeção e maiores valores de diâmetro do ventrículo esquerdo na sístole, de volume sistólico final do ventrículo esquerdo e de diâmetro aórtico no grupo que recebeu apenas maleato de midazolam (G2). Concluiu-se que, o maleato de midazolam apresentou-se mais eficaz, pois causou boa sedação nos animais, permitindo a realização de ecoDopplercardiogramas de qualidade e efeitos limitados no sistema cardiovascular.

The use of animals as experimental models often requires anesthesia, particularly when it comes to echocardiographic evaluation of rabbits. However, there is little information regarding the protocols and their effects on echocardiographic parameters. We used 20 male five month old New Zealand rabbits, weighing 3.2kg, distributed in two groups of 10 animals each: G1 - midazolam maleate associated with ketamine hydrochloride, and G2 - midazolam maleate. We compared the effect of two protocols on functional indicators of the left ventricle and the flow valves and we obtained lower values of heart rate and left ventricular ejection fraction and higher values of left ventricular diameter in systole, end-systolic volume of left ventricle and aortic diameter in the group that received only midazolam. Midazolam maleate was more effective because it promoted good sedation, allowing a good quality examination and limited effects on the cardiovascular system.

Determinaram-se os parâmetros ecocardiográficos em modo-M normais de cães da raça Yorkshire Terrier. Foram utilizados 30 cães clinicamente sadios, com peso médio de 2,42±0,64kg e idades entre um e seis anos. O diâmetro do átrio esquerdo e da aorta, a dimensão interna do ventrículo esquerdo na diástole e na sístole, a espessura do septo interventricular na diástole e na sístole, e a espessura da parede posterior do ventrículo esquerdo na diástole e na sístole correlacionaram-se com o peso corporal. As demais variáveis do modo-M não se correlacionaram com peso corporal, sexo ou idade. Os valores ecocardiográficos obtidos neste estudo podem ser utilizados como referência para cães dessa raça.

The aim of this study was to establish the normal echocardiographic parameters in M-mode for Yorkshire Terrier dogs. Thirty clinically normal dogs with mean weight of 2.42±0.64kg and ages varying from one to six years old were studied. The left atrial diameter, the aortic diameter, the left ventricular internal dimension at end - diastole and end - systole, end - diastolic and end - systolic interventricular septal thickness, and end - diastolic and end - systolic left ventricular posterior wall thickness had correlation with body weight. The other M - mode variables showed no linear correlations with body weight, sex or age. The echocardiographic values found in this study can be used as reference for this breed.

Determinou-se valor médio do vertebral heart size (VHS) em cães da raça Yorkshire Terrier. Foram selecionados 30 cães clinicamente normais, com média de peso de 2,42±0,64kg e idades entre um e seis anos. Os animais foram submetidos ao exame radiográfico do tórax nas projeções lateral direita, ventrodorsal e dorsoventral. Foram feitas mensurações para avaliação cardíaca e da profundidade e largura torácicas. O valor médio de VHS foi de 9,9±0,6 vértebras na projeção lateral, 10,1±0,6 vértebras na projeção ventrodorsal e 10,0±0,6 vértebras na projeção dorsoventral. Não houve diferença entre esses valores. Cinco animais (16,7%) apresentaram VHS acima de 10,5 vértebras, valor sugerido como limite superior para a maioria das raças, em projeção lateral. Os valores de VHS correlacionaram-se com peso corporal nas projeções lateral e ventrodorsal. A razão profundidade:largura torácica apresentou valor médio de 0,75±0,06. Não foi observada correlação entre a qualidade do tórax e o VHS.

The mean vertebral heart size (VHS) was established for Yorkshire Terrier dogs. Thirty clinically normal dogs with mean weight of 2.42±0.64kg and ages varying from one to six years of age, were studied. The animals were submitted to right lateral, ventrodorsal and dorsoventral thoracic radiographs. The Buchanan e Bücheler method was applied to the cardiac silhouette and thoracic depth and width. The VHS was 9.9±0.6 vertebrae on lateral, 10.1±0.6 on ventrodorsal and 10.0±0.6 on dorsoventral radiographs. There was no difference among these values. Five animals (16.7%) presented VHS values exceeding 10.5, the value suggested as upper limit for most breeds in lateral view. However, 95% of the animals in this study provide VHS values below the upper limit, and this should be equal to 11 vertebrae. The VHS values had significant correlation with body weight on lateral and VD radiographs. The mean depth:width ratio was 0.75±0.06. There was no correlation among VHS and depth:width ratios.

Estudou-se o perfil eletrocardiográfico e ecodopplercardiográfico de ovinos intoxicados experimentalmente pela Mascagnia rigida Griseb (Malpighiaceae). Quinze ovinos machos da raça Santa Inês, com sete meses de idade e pesando, em média, 27kg, foram distribuídos em três grupos (G) com cinco animais cada: No G1 (controle), os animais receberam apenas água; nos G2, receberam 20g/kg de M. rigida durante três dias; e no G3, 20g/kg de M. rigida, durante sete dias. As folhas de M. rigida foram trituradas com água e administradas na forma de suspensão, por via oral, por meio de sonda. M. rigida promoveu aumento da FC em repouso e, principalmente, durante o esforço físico e diminuiu a fração de ejeção e o percentual de encurtamento sistólico do ventrículo esquerdo.

The electrocardiographical and echocardiographical alterations produced by intraruminal administration of Mascagnia rigida griseb. (Malpighiaceae) in sheep were studied. Fifteen male Santa Inês sheep were randomly allotted to three groups: G1 - animals only received water (control); G2 - animals were treated with M. rigida, 20g/kg/day, for three days; and G3 - animals were treated with M. rigida, 20g/kg/day, for seven days. All treatments were administered by an orogastric tube. M. rigida administration produced increase in heart rate during rest and exercise, and decreased in fractional ejection, and fractional shortening.

Avaliaram-se o índice de performance do miocárdio (IPM) e outros índices ecoDopplercardiográficos de função ventricular em cães de duas raças de diferentes biotipos. Foram utilizados 24 cães da raça Schnauzer Miniatura, com média de peso de 8,4±1,6kg, e 24 cães da raça Boxer, com média de peso de 25,1±2,6kg. O IPM na raça Schnauzer Miniatura foi 0,32 e na raça Boxer 0,48. Os valores do IPM, dos índices de fase de ejeção, do período de pré-ejeção, da relação período de pré-ejeção/período de ejeção e do tempo de desaceleração da onda E do fluxo mitral diferiram entre as duas raças. Observou-se correlação entre o peso corporal e esses índices, e o peso corporal foi considerado a principal característica racial responsável pelas diferenças observadas. O tempo de ejeção (r=-0,51), o período de pré-ejeção (r=-0,44) e o tempo de relaxamento isovolumétrico (r=-0,38) foram os únicos parâmetros a apresentar correlação com a freqüência cardíaca (FC). O uso da relação período de pré-ejeção/tempo de ejeção e do tempo de ejeção corrigido pela freqüência cardíaca diminui o efeito da FC sobre esses parâmetros.

The index of myocardial performance (IMP) and others ecoDopplercardiographic indexes of ventricular function were evaluated in dogs of two different breeds and somatotypes. Twenty-four Miniature Schnauzer dogs averaging 8.4±1.6kg and 24 Boxer dogs averaging 25.1±2.6kg were used. IPM, ejection phase indexes, pre-ejection period, pre-ejection period/ejection time relation, and E wave deceleration time of mitral inflow showed correlation to body weight with significant differences between the breeds. Body weight was considered the main breed characteristic responsible for the observed differences. Ejection time (r=-0.51), pre-ejection time (r=-0.44), and isovolumetric relaxation time (r=-0.38) presented correlation with heart rate. The use of pre-ejection period/ejection time relation and ejection time correct by heart rate diminishes the influence of heart rate on the parameters.
